Hoppel › Brown noise for sleep
Brown noise for sleep
Brown noise sounds deep and soft, a bit like a distant waterfall or the hum inside a plane. Many people prefer it to the brighter white noise.
Listen: Brown noise for sleep
A one-minute sample. In the app it plays without a break. The sleep timer is part of Hoppel Plus. What is brown noise?
Noise contains all pitches at once. In white noise they’re all equally loud, so it sounds bright and hissy. In pink noise the highs are softer. In brown noise the low frequencies clearly dominate, so it sounds dark and warm.
Hoppel’s brown noise also breathes very slowly, so it never sounds mechanical.
What people use it for
Falling asleep when outside noise or racing thoughts get in the way, and studying or working in an open-plan office. If you want to use it for a child, ask your paediatrician about safe volume and distance first.
What research says
Honestly: not much is proven. A systematic review of noise as a sleep aid found only a few, mostly small studies of low quality. Its main benefit is masking disturbing sounds. Try it to see if it works for you, and keep the volume pleasantly low.
FAQ

Just loud enough to cover background sounds. A quiet conversation is a good guide.
Can I play brown noise all night?
Yes. Between 9 pm and 6 am, brown noise in Hoppel is free and unlimited. A sleep timer that fades it out after 10, 20 or 30 minutes is part of Hoppel Plus.
